Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread Launches 2024 Re-Election Bid with a Vision for Future-Proofing North Dakota’s Insurance Sector

BISMARCK, N.D. — With a track record of advanced leadership since 2016, Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread today proudly announces his bid for re-election. His tenure has been marked by a keen focus on emerging trends and challenges in the insurance sector, that includes being a strong advocate for consumers, focusing on cyber security and technology and a deep commitment to health care reform.

“As we navigate the complexities of evolving regulations and technological advancements, it’s important to have a leader who not only understands these challenges and is at the forefront of crafting innovative solutions. Serving North Dakotans in this capacity has been a remarkable journey, and I am excited to continue advocating for the people of our state,” said Godfread.

Under his guidance, the North Dakota Insurance Department has seen a significant enhancement in consumer assistance services, regulatory reforms to foster a competitive insurance market, and improving accountability measures for insurance companies. These initiatives have benefited local consumers and positioned North Dakota as a model for other states.

Godfread is a leader on the national level, chairing critical committees within the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), including the Health Care Committee, the Artificial Intelligence Working Group, and the Innovation, Cybersecurity, and Technology Taskforce. He was elected as President of the NAIC for 2025, and currently serves as President-Elect, a testament to his expertise and leadership in the field.

“Insurance regulation is fundamentally a state-driven process, and I am committed to ensuring North Dakotans' perspectives are heard and valued at the legislature and on the national stage. Despite the increasing threat of federal oversight, it is crucial to continue the work of being a champion of our state-based regulatory framework and safeguard the interests of our citizens,” Godfread emphasized.

As the head of the North Dakota Insurance Department, Godfread leads a dedicated team of professionals covering a wide range of functions, from consumer protection to financial surveillance. His department oversees a diverse portfolio of insurance products.

A devoted community member, Godfread lives in Bismarck with his family. His commitment extends beyond his professional role, as evidenced by his active participation in local organizations such as the president of the Missouri Valley YMCA and on the executive board of Special Olympics North Dakota, and as a basketball coach for children’s teams.
